Magic House with the St Martens.

Our friends, the St Martens, are members at the Magic House.  The other day they brought us along with them.  The Magic House is basically a big playhouse, discovery, children's museum sort of place.  Tons of fun and the second time we've been there (we visited years ago with Melanie DeMeester and their kids when we came and visited Covenant).
As you can see, Hope is pretty good friends with the St Marten's eldest daughter.

Yes, I know every nasty, disgusting, unwashed hand has touched those plastic pieces that I put my face (open-mouthed) in.  It looks pretty cool, if you ask me.
And Kathee got right into it, as well, making sure ROYGBIV were all decently and in order!  How Pauline of her!
Esther and N waited at the bottom of the 3-story slide for their sisters to come down.

Duped!

At Gideon's school, he gets fake money for behaving, helping out, etc, etc.  When he gets to $25 he gets to buy something out of the prize bin.  Well, he bought what he thought was a wooden train to paint and build.  When Kathee and I opened it after he went to bed, we found out that it had been opened, and that whoever donated it had filled it with junk.  There were wooden pieces, but they weren't for a train.  There was some other half-done art projects, too.

So we talked to Gideon about how many things in life aren't what they seem, that many times things in life look good on the outside but when you see what's inside it's junk, etc, etc, etc.  That being said, I took him out to find a project we could do in place of what he thought he had purchased.

In going to Home Depot, because I remember seeing some woodworking stuff YEARS ago in a store I was in, we found out that they only sell kids projects through the internet.  After talking to the ladies at customer service for a while, we ended up being given a woodworking project that they do with kids in-store once a month.  However, it would take too much of my work, and I wanted Gideon to build it.  So we ended up buying one at Walmart and heading home to paint and glue.
Then when he builds and paints, after the girls are sleeping, he and I can sit and chat.
I really look foward to 7:30-8pm each night when Gideon and I get to talk and do stuff as "just the guys."

By the way, when G's teacher found out, she let him pick another prize, which is a remote controlled moon that hangs on his wall and lights up.  It's super-cool.  In the end, he got way more than his fake $25.

Soulard Market

It seems like each time we go to the farmer's market in Soulard now that a couple stalls have chickens or ducks or rabbits.  Although all are cute, I'm not sure if they are to eat or to look at or to put in one's back yard for what they produce (aside from the rabbits).  Our kids love looking at the animals.  These were Japanese chickens.  That being said, I couldn't tell.  Their clucking and chirping sounded very American to me.
I love going to the market.  Though it's not the Central Market in Guatemala City or the Merkato in Addis Ababa, it'll do in a pinch.  And the family loves it.  Kathee gets her fresh mini-donuts every time we go, and the kids are amped to see if there is free face-painting at one of the booths.  It's always a fun time at the market!

The Kids Almost Got Trampled!

Laugh it up, but I love the World Bird Sanctuary.  When we would go to Bald Eagle Days when we lived in Moline, the WBS would bring eagles and other birds of prey up with them each year.  The year my extended family went to Branson, and knowing the WBS was in St Louis, I wanted to check out the WBS on the way through.  Although I can't say my family agrees with me, it's great and I loved it.  When we visited, as we were driving along the road, next to the road there was a high fence with barbed wire running along the top.  As we drove further, there was a bull elk sitting along the fence.  Weird.  So I did a bit of research when we got back from Branson and I found out it's a free county park in St Louis.  It has bison, elk, deer, and a bunch of water fowl.  So that was one place I wanted to go when we moved here.

This past fall, whe Kathee went to Montana for her cousin's wedding, I took the older kids to Lone Elk Park and had a blast.  So today, needing to get out of the apartment for a bit (cabin fever), we loaded up the kids and headed south.
As we drove through the park, when we'd spot something, the two older kids would unbuckle and look out the windows to see the animal(s).
We saw one deer.
A BUNCH of elk.
One bull elk
6 bison (not pictured above).  The kids seem to enjoy it.
We even got out and ran a bit (helped by the bison that tried to run us down).  As you can see, this is the two older kids' first time running from a wild animal.  Had they taken my route, they too, would have bee-lined it to the van and jumped through the window (like I did).  However, after about four times running around the van (with Kathee screaming and crying the entire time...wimp) they finally made it back.  I was quite impressed with how fast Gideon was.  And once they arrived safely in the van, I did have a sit-down with Hope about tripping her brother and screaming "all I have to do is outrun you."  I was apalled by her high-pitched laughing (think hyena) as she literally left him in the dust!    I didn't think that that was very loving at all.  So we put a bandaid over the gore-mark on Gideon's back and traveled on.  All in all, it was a fun day at the park.

Mom, I'm kidding.  Hope didn't trip Gideon.  But she did give him a sweet hip check that sent him spralling.  Okay, maybe I made up that part, too.  Maybe we stopped to stretch a bit and check to see if there were any geocaches nearby.  What they were honestly doing was chasing a butterfly.  And they chased it for a while and had a great time doing so.  But chasing a butterfly at a park with wild bison is way boring.  So I spruced it up a bit.  Take me to court.

Tha'ts all!

Fitz's

I forgot this little doozy!  When Adam and Maharah's family visited we went to Fitz's down in the Delmar Loop.  It's a local root beer bottler that is really good.  Matt Williams raved about it and then took us there after a backyard Bible club when we were here on the mission trip a few years ago.  Anywho, after the Jones-Terwilleger connection went to the zoo, we went to Fitz's.  Adam and I ordered this guy.  It.  Is.  Awesome!!!!!
French fry base.  Next is some kind of (liquid?) cheese.  Then chili with a big hamburger patty in it.  Then a fried egg (sunny side up).  Then shredded cheese.  Wow!  So good.  So, so good!!!

Queeny Park with St Martens

Epic playground!  If you look behind the lady in the foreground, you see a tunnel.  Kids can climb through that and come out at different areas of the equipment.  Just another cool found when geocaching.  I took Gideon there last fall as there are like 50 caches in this huge park.
So we went with our friends, John and Tara St. Marten, along with their two daughters, who are between Gideon's and Esther's ages.

Riding adventures

Gideon said tonight that he loves riding!  We went across the road to Conway Park and he rode the 1 mile loop.  Big accomplishment!  He was pretty proud.

Books read this year

The books on the left have been read in their entirety.  The ones on the right are Greek resource books.  The picture doesn't include another 5 or so books I read on my kindle.

Family Picture(s)

This is how family pictures look right now.  NOT ONE PICTURE IS A GOOD PICTURE.  NOT A ONE.  And this doesn't even include all the pictures I took.  The other observation I make here is that Esther has great form IF SHE WERE A LONG JUMPER!!!  Enjoy the laugh.  Kathee and I sure did!

Creve Coeur Lake

I needed to get off campus tonight for sanity's sake.  So we went up to Creve Coeur Lake Park, stopping at Little Caeser's to grab some Hot n' Ready's.  We ate right by the lake and then spent some time messing around on the beach.  The kids seemed to love it.  And there were tons of people there, too, so that was fun.  By the way, this is the lake that I normally ride my bike to and around when I ride.  I think it's right at 2 miles around the bike path.
Gideon's afro is coming along nicely!
The girls loved playing in the sand, too.
